Integrated Community Based Approach to Climate Change Mitigation in Three Mangrove UNREDD+ Pilot Communities in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The Integrated Community Based Approach to Climate Change Mitigation in three Mangrove UNREDD+ Pilot Communities in Akpabuyo LGA of Cross River State shall be implemented in communities of Edik Idem, Akwa Obutong, Esuk Okon, Akpabuyo. These communities have population sizes of: Edik Idem (967), Akwa Obutong (1,003), Esuk Okon (636). These communities have over the years been exposed to unprecedented environmental challenges which include; deforestation of the mangrove ecosystems due to over-exploitation of the forest for fuel wood, flooding, Water pollution from illegal oil bunkering, poverty and unemployment. The project activities include: 1. Sensitization of the rural poor in the 3 communities on the impacts of climate change as well as mitigation measures 2.Demonstration of forest regeneration of indigenous mangrove species 3. Planting of 2,000 bush mango trees on 2km2 size of degraded forest areas 4. Awareness creation of 300 beneficiaries from each community on the use of alternative/renewable and clean energy source and training of 300 community members on the construction and use of rocket stoves. 6. Construction of 100 rocket stoves made from locally sourced materials 7. Train and empower 300 participants from each community members mainly women and girls with alternative sources of livelihoods.
