Recycling and Re-Using Plastic Bottles: Contributing to Food Security
Success Laventille Lions Club was established to empower volunteers to serve the community of Success Laventille, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through the spirit of Lionism. The Club has been doing projects in the Success Laventille and Beetham area since 1992 and completed a collection of plastic bottle project with primary schools in the area in 2014.

The main stakeholders will be the primary school children and women in the community of Success Laventille. The community through the schools and persons involved in the activities of the community centre will be involved in the project design, implementation and evaluation.

The disposal of used plastic bottles has been observed to cause health and environmental problems such as flooding. The goal of the project is to reduce the amount of used plastic bottles being disposed of indiscriminately in the environment and to recycle the plastic bottles in a short crop agricultural initiative. The main results are that the community become engaged in the process of reducing waste plastic bottles from being disposed of indiscriminately in the environment by recycling as well as reusing some of the plastic bottles in sustainable livelihood activities. The main activities include education session on impact of indiscriminate dumping of used plastic bottles on the environment and the importance of recycling; train of the women of re-using the plastic bottles as containers to grow food; and to engage in a short crop agricultural initiative.
