Developing sustainable livelihood based on Mo seaweed for fishermen living in the bank of Nha Trang bay to strengthen biodiversity conservation of the buffer zone of marine protected area of Nha Trang bay, Khanh Hoa
Sargassum plays an important role in protecting biodiversity resources. Sargassum is home and laying position for many coastal fisheries such as snail, crab, and shrimp. Sargassum also absorb CO2 which constitutes climate change abatement. Moreover, sargassum becomes stable income for fishermen, contributing to maintain sustainable development for fishermen community facing with global climate change. However, sargassum in the Nha Trang Bay marine protected area is at risk resulting from exploitation under no control. For instance, the number of sargassum decreased to 78% from 1980 to 2010. The project ?Developing sustainable livelihood on sagassum for fishermen living in the bank of Nha Trang bay to strengthen biodiversity conservation of the buffer zone of marine protected area of Nha Trang bay, Khanh Hoa? comes into effect in order to develop a sargassum community based climate change adaptation model through the management of rational resource exploitation in the buffer zone of Nha Trang Bay?s MPA contributing to long-term sargassum resource utilization and improving part of poor fishers? livelihoods in the Bay of Nha Trang. The project is implemented in the area of Hon Tre Island covering sargassum protecting area of 23,5ha
Specific Objectives:
Objective 1: Raising awareness of biodiversity resources conservation among local community; improving sargassum harvesting techniques; and reducing climate changes.
Objective 2: Improving local people's livelihoods through zoning activities for sargassum resources management and harvesting purposes.
Objective 3: Submitting proposals for policy making and replicating successful models for managing sargassum resources in the Bay of Nha Trang.
Expected Outcomes:
- Awareness of biodiversity conservation and sustainable marine resources utilization and exploitation benefits among 500 local households and 1,400 primary- and secondary- school students shall be well improved;
- Sargassum harvesting techniques shall be transferred and grasped by local fishermen to improve sargassum yield and quality, and enhance the accessibility of households currently harvesting marine resources in the Bay of Nha Trang to local government?s policies on fishery resources management and protection.
- A community based sargassum resources management model shall be successfully developed for their sustainable sargassum resources self-governing and exploitation, and 40 households shall be involved in the self-governing model.
- A decision on the zoning for community based sargassum resource management shall be issued and local marine resources management regulations shall be promulgated .
- The successful model shall be widely replicated to other wards: Ward People's Committee of Vinh Tho (Chong Island); Vinh Truong (Song Lo); Crocodile Cape (Tri Nguyen Island); Vinh Hoa Ward (Ba Lang).
