Creative initiation of serious action against veld fires through theatre and distribution of firefighting equipment.

The project aims at educating, informing and sensitising people in the communities on the dangers of veld fires through performing arts/theatre. It will raise awareness and distribute fire fighting equipment in the villages of Artesia, Leshibitse, Ramotlabaki, Oliphant Drift and Dikgonnye in Kgatleng district.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. There will be meetings with stakeholders that will be used to share results 2. Workshops will be held to communicated the results 3. Evaluation will also be done to reflect on the impact 4. The DVD will be produced to communicate the project results after completion. The DVD will be distributed to relevant stakeholders. A total of 100 copies will be done for distribution. 5. The report will equally be an informative tool on the project and proposed recommendations

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Bakgatla like other tribes in Botswana live off the land, keep livestock, do arable farming and depend on ecosystem good and services. The theatrical production will be use as a vehicle to enhance livelihood activities through management of veld fires. As much as veld fires can be used as a rangeland management tool, when used at the wrong time; it has detrimental effects. In light of persistent droughts and climate change, it is crucial that veld fires are minimized as they have potential to damage rangelands and veld products

Gender Focus

The group structure is formed in a way that there are men and women who will participate in the project for the duration of the project. The audiences will equally involve both men and women. The project will not discriminate in any way between men and women.

Notable Community Participation

The performers, actors and artists will be young people using edutainment to dissemination information veld fires to both the young and the old.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The theatre production will be documented through a DVD to be shared with the public. In addition, the theatre production will be staged through road shows in the villages kgotlas in Artesia, Leshibitse, Ramotlabaki, Oliphant Drift and Dikgonnye.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The theatrical performances will be done in Setswana language to cover a wider audience.

Policy Impact

The theatrical production and the DVD will contribute to dissemination of information on veld fires and protection of veld products in line with the associated policies.

Capacity - Building Component

Workshops will be held for the actors to share insight and on management of veld fires. The information session will be meant to increase the understanding of veld fires and ensure that actors internalize the message hence delivering factual correct theatrical performances.

Project Results

A total of 38 stakeholders being the community leadership and representatives from government departments from Kgatleng District were consulted and sensitised about veld fire management. Ngwao Pinagare Organisation has chosen the use of theatre in raising communities? awareness on veld fire management in 5 villages. 5 theatrical performances were staged in Oliphant?s drift, Ramotlabaki, Artesia, Kgomodiatshaba and Dikgonnye villages to sensitise communities on the dangers and management of veld fires including environmental conservation. A total of 536 (241 males and 295 females) people attended the performances and these people are expected to effectively manage veld fires in their localities in partnership with the Department of Forestry and Range Resources. Furthermore, community based fire management trainings were conducted in the 5 villages so as to sensitse communities on effective fire management. In addition, various fire fighting equipments were allocated to the communities in the villages for use during fire management. In an effort to upscale the project, Ngwao Pinagare Organisation staged a theatrical performance for 160 participants during the National fire management conference in Palapye through the invitation by Department of Forestry and Range Resources to show the importance of veld fire management at national level.
