Enviroloo Project in Aitutaki
The ?Enviroloo Project? is Stage 2 of ACTs ?Environmentally Friendly Loos (Enviroloos) Project, and aims to provide much needed environmentally friendly public toilet facilities for Aitutaki.
Aitutaki is a very small island with approximately 1800 residents. Our small island currently only has two public toilet facilities, both are in a very poor state. One facility is currently unusable.
Aitutaki often expands to well over 2000 during our peak tourist seasons. Our island of Aitutaki and our numerous pristine motu (islands) scattered throughout our vast lagoon are used recreationally by both residents and visitors. Activities include weddings, filming, sporting events (kite boarding, sailing, fishing etc.), church gatherings etc. Some events cater for up to 250 persons. Hence our concern and need to try and obtain some environmentally friendly public toilet facilities for these various locations.
Overall the aim of this project is to provide hygienic, environmentally friendly toilet facilities for our community and visitors to our island. By doing so, ACT will:
??reduce the potential risk of pollution caused by human waste to our land and lagoon.
??promote healthy living and to demonstrate the benefits of using
waterless, composting toilets to our community.
The Enviroloo Project has 3 Stages:
Stage 1 of the Enviroloo Project commenced in 2012 and allowed ACT to purchase and trial a portable waterless composting toilet (the Enviroloo) to ensure its suitability for our conditions and needs. Stage 1 was completed in 2013. Stage 1 has enabled ACT to move on to Stage 2 with clear evidence to support the need for the project.
Stage 2 aims to purchase and install 2 additional Environmentally Friendly Toilet facilities (one trailered Enviroloo, and 1 fixed Bioloo (see Annex 1 for more information).
Stage 2 will provide comprehensive training regarding the correct use and maintenance of each toilet facility.
ACT intend to install:
??A trailered Enviroloo at the Aitutaki Sailing Club, Ootu beach.
Ootu Beach is one of Aitutaki?s most popular swimming beaches and tourist attractions
and often hosts up to 200 persons (especially when cruise ships are visiting) ? it currently has no
public toilet facility. Alongside the recreational use from tourists and locals
it is also home/base for the Aitutaki Sailing Club, Paddling Associations and Lagoon
tour operators.
??A Bioloo solution at Aitutaki?s ?Base One Beach?.
This is a popular swimming location for locals and tourists. Local community groups
often camp overnight. Churches and schools often hold their picnic days at this site and
many birthdays, weddings, etc. are celebrated on this beach ? it currently has no toilet facilities.
NOTE: Ootu Beach and Base One Beach are proven the most common locations for use
for ACTs current trailered Enviroloo purchased in Stage 1 of this project. (This unit is
hired by our community and visitors for their events.)
Stage 3 Once the above solutions are proven suitable for our conditions, ACT aims to seek additional funding to purchase and install additional facilities at our most visited motu (namely Tavake (formally known as Honeymoon Island), Maina, Akaiami and Tapuaetai (One Foot Island)); at each Village area in Aitutaki (e.g. Sports field or wharf area).
Anecdotal evidence suggests the current trailered unit has reduced risk to our society from infection and bacterial diseases. It is clear that these units will eliminate the risk of contaminating our land, lagoon, and associated ecosystems from human waste.
This project fits within the Cook Islands Country Programme Strategy 2010-2012.
