Nangarhar University campus was dark during night as there was no street lights. It was more challenging for students especially girls to walk after sunset due to security threats e.g. theft etc. Renewable Rural Energy Society in close collaboration with Nangarhar University implemented a solar street lighting project with the support of GEF SGP in Nangarhar University. Total of around 160 solar light installed in various location in the campus. The project is serving as good model and resulted into creased awareness of about 15,000 students. During dark hours, the risk of theft decreased, student come out for sports, study under lights when the main grid is off. A team of students and administrative staff are maintaining the solar lights after being trained by the project.

One of the main impact of the project is that University of Nangarhar is working on a concept to start a renewable energy faculty in Nangarhar University.
