Reducing Solid Waste and Green House Gases of Pangkor Island By Innovative 3R Program (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) Business .
Reducing Solid Waste and Green House Gases of Pangkor Island By Innovative 3R Program (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) Business .
This project: 1) Executing action plan to reduce the solid waste disposal (thus will reduce the waste to incinerator), this is of urgent need. 2) Evaluates the impact of such reduction in waste disposal (since it is an island as a close loop cycle of waste), it is very practical to know the impact of our works directly. 3) Work very closely with SWCorp and E-Idaman (Perak is not under Act 672 that is going to implement the mandatory separation at the source) & NGOs, to provide an alternative to the current national separation at the source ruling, we propose a community-incentive based programme (as a self-sustainable business in future), towards lower emission (greenhouse gases & toxic releases) problems, specifically to the air and water in the region.

This project aims to reduce the greenhouse gases and pollutants by first engaging the local community. The impact of the project can be easily evaluated as Pangkor Island landfill and incinerator are used mainly by the local community as a major solid waste disposing area. Pangkor Island is separated from the mainland, and thus any impact on the waste reduction will eventually be reflected in the waste collection, landfill, sea dump and incineration.
By reducing solid waste to the incinerator and landfill area, the greenhouse gases and pollutants can be largely reduced. Currently, there are a few recyclers (family type) collecting major items, like papers, and bottles. However, other forms of recyclable items, like plastics bags, e-wastes, etc,
cannot be segregated from the solid waste collection system. This will eventually become the pollution source on the island. The amount and the supply chain to transport those recyclable items
are too costly and difficult. In this project, the local community will be encouraged to take up new
business opportunities, such as: solid waste collector, value added products from reuse and recycling
of solid waste, new ?Green? technology users/providers, waste collection and separation services.
Enhancing the reduction, reusing, and recycling of waste could eventually reduce the waste pollutants
in the environment.

In this project, we are targeting to engage every person on the island, including the short term tourist
and working persons that commute between the island and mainland daily. We hope our impact is to
reduce the overall recyclable disposal on the island to a minimal level. The community will be engaged by various initiatives integrated in to this project by:

1) Data collection and greenhouse gases monitoring / measurement from the incinerator and
landfill. The worsening effect of the releases will be reported and awareness campaign will be
launched to change the villagers? behavior towards higher environmental awareness and
climate change issue.
2) Using the same measurement and monitoring results, the project will be strategized on
engaging businesses and policy makers to help reduce solid waste disposal and activities.
Proper waste management and collection system is proposed in place regardless of the
technology in the waste treatment and disposal. This is a community-incentive based 3R
programme.
3) Stimulating the business model (private limited company are encouraged). The local
community will be encouraged to take up new business opportunities, such as: solid waste
collector, value added products from reuse and recycling of solid waste, new equipment
operators, waste collection and separation services, new biodegradable products (supported
by ENER WORLDWIDE Sdn. Bhd and WORLD GREEN MISSION Limited) to reduce solid
waste and etc.

The most important of all, a core program of 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) will be implemented
within the Island compound. The ultimate aim is to reduce greenhouse gases releases and pollutants
thru the 3R program. The program will be emphasized on the zero waste principle. The retailers will
be benefited by becoming the collector of recycling waste. The consumers will be benefited by
depositing the waste to the retailers. With an innovative point system, the community supports and
volunteering in recycling waste logistics. Other than the qualitative impact to the community, the
impact of 3R will be evaluated based on the incinerator releases and total tonnage of solid waste
disposal accordingly.

Project Objective 1:- To evaluate and organize environmental awareness campaign to change the islanders? behaviour towards better environment.
Activities:-
1.1 Greenhouse gases measurement and monitoring, incinerator stack air quality reporting to the authority and public;
1.2 Conduct Outreach Events to promote 3R awareness and environmental impacts reporting.

Project Objective 2:- To reduce the greenhouse gas releases by engaging the community in sustainable recycling business model
Activities:-
2.1 Initiating and participating in a novel model of 3R solid waste management program;
2.2 taking up technological approach related to the 3R program;
2.3 make influences to the policy maker in waste management and disposal system.
