Environmental resources conservation and utilization”
Mulanje was one of the districts that were declared disaster affected areas, by the state President of Malawi among other 15 districts. In Mulanje, the most hit area by the heavy floods was along Thuchila River and surrounding households where REFORD had implemented its project. Over 27000 fruits and 67,000 trees planted alongside crops and houses and other household belongings were washed away by heavy floods.
This has resulted into the project beneficiaries have nothing to depend on / and or hope for, as they aimed at reducing land degradation and the adverse effects of climate change in the impact area of GVH Mwawihe in TA Juma in Mulanje. The beneficiaries are facing acute hunger as a result of loss of crops due to the floods. Premature stoppage of the rains in the area and close neighboring villages has also contributed to hunger. There has also been a reduction in fertile land together with the loss of the fruit trees that were previously planted during the implementation of the Community Environmental Resources project.
Primary Objective
To increase coping mechanism for those affected by diverse effects of climate change in the impact area by 2016.
Specific Objective
-Promote establishment of competent community structures for management of village forests and land resources by 2016
-Increase availability of agro forestry trees in the community by 2016
-Improve soil fertility and high dependency on fuel wood as a source of income by 2016
-Create community awareness on disasters with respect to the causes of climate change as well as mitigation measures.
