Biogas Plants for Renewable Energy for Rural Households in Kanyakumari District.
Biogas Plants for Renewable Energy for Rural Households in Kanyakumari District.
Project Background
In 2006, CHARDEP has provided a cow and calf each to 250 families affected by the tsunami. These families belong to non fisher-folk communities and are dependent on shell collection, coir rope making, marginal farming and casual labour for their livelihoods. The beneficiaries are carefully monitored and the livestock of the families has been increased through technical guidance and support by the organization.
In rural areas, kerosene, firewood and LPG are used as fuel. All these forms of fuel are non renewable and polluting in nature. The general practice of the communities is to collect and store the cow dung for later use as a fertilizer or it is sold. This prolonged storage of cow dung there by results in the emission of Methane (CH4), a green house gas which leads to global warming.
This project aims to create awareness about climate change and to provide a long-term and a sustainable solution by assisting the construction of 160 biogas units for the utilization of cow dung of up to 250 rural households. Thus, this project provides biogas as a source of renewable energy which aids in the economic development of the communities.
The 160 beneficiaries have access to cow dung which is produced by the livestock of the other 90 families who had received 250 cows which were co financed by Akshardham Sansthan.
