Biogas plants as an alternate clean energy for economic empowerment of PVTGs - poor, landless farmers in Sindhudurg
The project aims at forming ?Biogas plants as an alternate clean energy for economic empowerment of PVTGs - poor, landless farmers in Sindhudurg?. The project will be implemented in 50 core villages and will cover nearly 3500 HHs which belongs to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) from Sindhudurg District of Maharashtra and will cover approximate 4500 acres of land (Nearest city: Kudal).
The primary objective of this project is to give support to the extremely poor farmers by giving them a Biogas plant of their own. Thus they will avail the benefits of additional income, convenience, health and hygiene benefits and thus move towards stability and better quality of life. The Organisation has planned that the objectives can be achieved with the implementation of the following activities:
? Selection of villages and HHs (House Holds) for Biogas construction and baseline surveys.
? Promote women SHGs and link the biogas selection of HHs
? Exposure visit to learn management of Biogas construction & use
? Identify through PRAs the no. of units required in the communities
? Construction of 450 Biogas units.
? Fodder plots development on a range of variety with each beneficiary.
? Organizing animal health camp with community contribution.
? Development of local masons for the upkeep.
? Travis installation in 50 villages.
The Project will train & strengthen local masons from the community for upkeep of Biogas plants, and would thus increase their employment. The NGO has already started working Jointly with Sindhudurg District Central Coop. Bank for the rural development, specifically in Kudal, Sawantwadi & Vengurla Taluka of Sindhudurg Talukas for the co financing with their new invention of using of bamboo in place of the steel and chicken mesh in construction of the ?Biogas Dome?, (It has been tested and successfully implemented in some of the HHs and now they want to apply the technology in the project area). The NGO will also train the women groups to use the biogas that will help in improving their health. They are also trying to raise high co-financing of around 80% from NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) and other sources for Biogas unit. The project will also develop Mobile helpline system to ensure timely help and support in up keeping plants for trouble free operation.
Project Outcomes:
? 450 Biogas plants built for extremely poor farmers.
? Fodder plots developed on different fodder variety in 400 hac. of land with two beneficiaries each in 50 villages;
? Linkage developed with agriculture deptt.
? 24 local masons created for the construction and upkeep of the bio gas units and develop permanent employment opportunity for those 24 families.
? Use of travis and its benefits in 50 villages with 30 travis installment.
? Farmers will be educated in fodder plot development and improved /cross breed grass varieties as developed by Animal Husbandry department.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Brochures and small booklets will be printed and distributed among the beneficiaries to provide them the information on the Biogas for poor project. Lessons learned/ good practices/ statistical analysis will be documented and advertised in the local news papers. Video film and banners will also be made regarding the same.
Capacity - Building Component
Exposure visits will be organized for the communities in order to make them aware regarding the management of Biogas. Women will be trained to operate the biogas plant. 10 Local masons will be trained for the upkeep of the bio gas units. Farmers will be trained to carry out minor maintenance work to ensure uninterrupted operation of the bio gas.
