Mokema Natural Heritage Conservation
Mokema Natural Heritage Conservation
There is lack of awareness about the importance of natural heritage resulting in destruction of the natural environment, cultural heritage and wildlife and its natural habitat. The rate at which the destruction is taking place does not guarantee that future generations will be able to enjoy these resources. Mokema is endowed with cultural heritage in the form of rock art and wetlands that are important habitats for various bird species. However the rock art is being destroyed by livestock by scratching against the rocks and dust from trampling on the soil around the rocks. The art is further destroyed by people who splash the rocks with water to accentuate the san paintings causing the rock to peel off. Wetlands by virtue of them being wet all year around are always greener and thus become the preferred areas for grazing especially during the dry season and for livestock watering. The Mokema wetland is surrounded by cropland. Therefore the wetland is threatened by siltation and contamination by run-off loaded with agro-chemicals; trampling by livestock; and, uncontrolled killing of birds that inhabit the wetland. With GEF SGP support, the san rock art cave was fenced off to control access and livestock grazing on the targeted wetlands has reduced drastically.

However, the attraction sites still require further development and marketing. Through developed partnerships with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture and that of Forestry and Land Reclamation, capacity development in ecotourism and runoff control will continue. Proper signage and publicity of the site still remain a challenge though. The objective of the proposed mop-up activity is thus promotion of ecotourism in Mokema. This will be achieved through:

i. Awareness creation about the natural and cultural heritage, its value and socio-economic opportunities it presents
ii. Publicity and promotion of Mokema as a tourist destination
iii. Development of attraction sites and putting up appropriate signage
iv. Promotion of ecotourism and other initiatives as a means of livelihood support
v. Promotion of public participation
