Demonstration of solar powered light traps for insects as part of an effort for minimizing use of pesticides in agriculture
Albania has an increasing trend of exporting early fruits and vegetables in the northern European countries. As part of global trend, there is an ever increasing sensitivity among customers related to the minimal use/presence of pesticides in the products. Introduction and promotion of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques among farmers is a very desirable strategic action in Albania. While IPM consists of a series of interventions, this project will demonstrate the effectiveness of using light traps powered by solar energy. The positive phototaxis i.e. the attraction of insects towards light is a well known technique, but the increased availability of solar powered devices has made this more accessible to farmers.
