Best practices in sustainable organic agriculture at the Deighton Griffith School
The project seeks to employ a sustainable agricultural system as a means of improving crop cultivation in the garden plot at the Deighton Griffith School. Its four objectives are

1. To provide protection from pests as a means of improving the quality of crops harvested by 50% in the first year of cultivation.
2. To increase the use of organic fertilizers by 50% within the first year of cultivation as a means of improving soil fertility in the garden plot.
3. To utilize rain water harvesting as a means of conserving the domestic water supply by at least 50% within the first year of installation..
4. To establish a drip irrigation and mister system which would deliver the direct supply of water needed for crop cultivation.

Project Activities include

Activity 1: Planning and procurement for construction and/or the installation of the greenhouse and shade house, rain harvesting equipment and irrigation system.
Activity 2: Installation and Retrofitting of roof guttering , rain water storage tanks, shade house and greenhouse
Activity 3: Training of ~110 persons (students and teachers) in greenhouse technology management, shade house and hydroponics management, integrated pest management and protective agriculture and plant propagation
Activity 4: Crop Production (cultivation) of short and long term crops in open field and in the greenhouse (e.g. sweet potatoes, pumpkins, cassava and short term crops such as cucumbers, okras and beans)
Activity 5: Experimentation of various techniques, specifically use of row covers, container gardening and organic pesticide/fertilizer production
Activity 6: Outreach activities will be conducted e.g. Tours for school children and local farmers, showcases such as Speech Day, Open Day or Farmers? Markets and documentary with Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS).
