Enhancing Food Security and Creating Alternative, Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities through Ecotourism and the Strengthening of Traditional Farming Systems in Ngardmau State, Republic of Palau
While food security is a serious issue for Palau - particularly with the projected impacts from climate change, due to lifestyle changes such as change in food preferences, transportation, and the economy the over the past three decades, there has been a drastic decrease in the amount of taro cultivated in the State of Ngardmau. The women in Ngardmau recognize these issues and would like to implement a project to create the infrastructure as well as the environmental and socio-economic conditions for:
(1) increased taro cultivation;
(2) traditional knowledge transfer of taro cultivation from one generation to another; and,
(3) new and sustainable livelihood opportunities for community members around taro cultivation.
If the taro patch (mesei) is planted and thriving, individuals within the community could conduct taro patch eco-tours and package the tour as an ?add-on? to the waterfall tour. Tour guide training will be conducted as well as training on value-adding and marketing of agricultural and other locally made products.
