Land Development and sustainable approaches among tribal households by equitable use of natural resources.

The project addresses 3 sectors for sustainable development, land use and livelihood. The project aims at improving living conditions of tribal community of 10 villages in Koeltondang Panchayat at Chakradharpur, West Singhbhum district.
Project Objectives:
1. Enhance food security and cash income among 500 farmers by introducing improved farming practices and sustainable natural resource management.
2. Environmental protection and promotion to revitalize the depleted forest cover.
3. Sustainable CBOs are formed and institutionalized.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

2 SHG cluster will be formed and strengthened. Women will strengthen their active participation in Gram Sabhas and they will be equally involved in taking decisions in meetings for village governance and availing different schemes. Farmers use water harvesting structures accessed through projects and government schemes to control the runoff water and thus protecting their crop fields from soil erosion. Gramin bank will be established in 3 villages to restore indigenous species seed. The project will carry our necessary capacity building for rural producers, the members of producer organizations and staff of implementing agencies. Farmers will be provided with improved agriculture practices through SRI with organic farming (Demo-community orientation + conoweeder + sprayer).

Capacity - Building Component

50 traditional leaders, SHGs and PRI members will be trained on 8 components of good governance and millennium development; good governance & PRI. 60 members will be trained on village developmental vision settings for making village development plan. 80 members will be made aware on ?Swadhikar- Right based approach for integrated development. Exposure trip will be organized for 40 farmers at HARP, Ranchi for improved cultivation. 50 participants will be trained on benefits of soil and water conservation measures. 60 farmers will be trained on vegetable cultivation and horticulture initiative with organic farming (green house, vegetable nursery raising, drip irrigation, dry land horticulture)

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Flex poster, flex banner, leaflets will be printed and distributed among the people

Notable Community Participation

Groups of youth volunteers will be formed and trained for their empowerment. Village youth will also be given vocational training and financial support for setting up their enterprises.

Policy Impact

Meetings will be conducted with Government officials, bank and other stake holders at block level on sharing project outcomes and liasioning. Support will be taken from MNREGA and other government departments such as ATMA, BRGF, Agricultural activities for hardware activities. Different stakeholders (government, NGO and communities will come together to prepare Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the village.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at environment conservation and sustainable livelihood creation among 1664 tribal households by equitable use of natural resources. The project will address 3 sectors for sustainable development, land use and livelihood. The project will enhance food security and cash income among 500 farmers by introducing improved farming practices and sustainable natural resource management. Land productivity will be increased by 40 %. 10 SHGs will be given alternative source of income as goat rearing. Nutritional food security in the target villages increased from 40% to 65%. Smokeless energy efficient cook stoves will be promoted for 500 families. 3 new wells will be constructed in Sagepee and Kuiltongdang and renovation of 5 Kuchha wells will be done.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Workshop will be conducted on the methodology to apply for different government schemes like MNREGA, NRLM, NRHM etc. Awareness generation on formation of village resource centre (marketing and seeds). Kisan Mela will be organized.

Project Results

* 8 Standing Committees formed in every village. Out of 8 Standing Committees, 4-5 Committees namely Education Committee, Health & Sanitation Committee, Forest Committee, village development Committees and Kamal clubs are functional with proper documents.
* Villagers of 3 villages namely; Komai, Kuilitodang and Ichakuti made aware of the benefits on earthen check for run of water. 5 farmers checked the runoff water and use the water of irrigation purpose for cultivating vegetables.
* Project Staff generated awareness on Health and Hygiene and as a result villagers in Tuiya, Kuilitodang and Komai Villages had Clean Village Campaign.
* After Construction of SCT (Staggard Contour Trench) increased Vegetative Grouth Surrounding the SCT. Increases moisture level lower reaches of land as a result 59 Farmers Cultivated Kharif Crops (Maize, Arhar, and Tomato).
* 12 Farmers Club formed. Regular Meetings of framers? club resulted as 32 farmers get their paddy crop insured. 29 farmers applied of KKC loan, 5 farmers got Rs. 10,000 each. 2 Farmer?s Group (Komai and Dharamsai village) are applied for Water pump set 4HP, Rasika Jonko applied for Power Tiller at ATMA Office. 41 farmers got 72 kgs seed of Paddy, Arhar and Moong. They have also received 12 conoweeder.
* For better communication between villagers and ATMA office they have selected 5 Kissan Mitra for 10 Villages, 166 farmers engaged in second crop cultivation. 154 Farmers for Vegetable Cultivation in1754 decimil, 25 Farmers in Maize Cultivation (238 decimil), Arhar Cultivation by 34 Farmers in 750 decimal, 5 farmers Moong cultivation in 2 Acres.
* Liaison done with Krishi Vigyan Kendra for training of fisheries. 3 day training program attended by 5 farmers. These trained farmers encouraged other in the village to start up fisheries. 58 Farmers put 285 kgs fish lings in 54 ponds.
* 2 farmers for lac training went to KVK, Muri. On return they shared about lac cultivation with other farmers. 7 farmers in 65 trees (Kusum) are doing Lac Cultivation. Also 5 farmers have developed 250 Semialata Saplings for lac cultivation. 49 farmers started Tasar Cultivation in 246 trees.
* Regular SHG meeting developed courage among women for collective farming. Masuriburu Mahila Samitee becomes inspiration for others in the village due to their united efforts in doing collective vegetable farming (Vegetable- Tomato, Chilly, Ladies finger, Beans, Sweet potato, Pumpkin, and Green Vegetables).
