“Using giant tortoise, a national icon of international significance to revive awareness of our environment protection heritage through street art”
“Using giant tortoise, a national icon of international significance to revive awareness of our environment protection heritage through street art”
Artists will, in partnership with the local community and local schools in particular, create a target group of 20 life-size fibre glass or cast tortoises, which will be deployed and installed at various sites across Mahe, Praslin and La Digue islands. There will be a full annotative package which will supplement the main exhibitions and reinforce the central message of the project, specifically to prioritise awareness of the fragility of the Seychelles eco system in the face of global warming and raising sea levels. The project message will also reinforce Seychelles?s reputation as a champion of the natural environment. Just as the iconic bear was chosen to be the ideal sculpture for the German capital, the giant tortoise of Aldabra- Seychelles' largest endemic reptile with a high level of public appeal ? is envisaged to capture the hearts of Seychellois as well as the many thousands of visitors who will experience the project during its initial 12 month phase.

The aim of this project is not just to put art onto the streets but also to enhance the built environment and to raise people's spirits; to put colour and laughter into the townscape whilst drawing attention to serious issues.
The initial tortoise models will be made by members of Arterial Network, involving the community with an emphasis on inclusion of young people who, working under supervision, will be able to enhance their practical skills, gain experience of 3D and 2D work, and add a portfolio of achievement to their formal school outcomes.
