Combating Land Degredation and Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
Combating Land Degredation and Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
Nimshong village under Korphu Gewog of Trongsa Dzongkhag is considered as one of the most vulnerable and poorest communities in the District. The village has a clustered community located on a slope valley; it is three hours walking distance from the Trongsa-Gelephu highway and falls under Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park. The community has 67 households, one Primary School and a RNR center.
The community has very few wetland holdings yet over 90% of the households largely depend on dry land by growing maize and buckwheat as their main crops. All most 99% of their dry lands were located on a high gradient which indicates degradation of soil fertility through different forms of erosion, this is evident through constant drop in their annual crop production; which is not only the concerns of the whole community but of the Gewog and Dzongkhag Agriculture sector as well.
This project aims to enhance the livelihood of the poorest community of Trongsa Dzongkhag through the application of appropriate Sustainable Land Management (SLM) technologies in the community?s land which is highly vulnerable to land degradation because of its rugged terrain and unstable soil formation.
The main SLM technologies will include terracing, growing fodder tress and cultivation of organic vegetables and high value commercial crop such as ginger.
