Increasing productivity and rural income through sustainable agriculture landscape management
Thongrong is one of the remotest villages of Phongmey gewog under Trashigang Dzongkhag and has 46 households. The village is located on the right bank of Gamrichhu. The main livelihood source is agriculture farming and the main cereal crops maize, upland rice and millet are cultivated on the steep hill sides. The total wetland in the village is about 14 acres and the dry land is around 114 acres; only 20 acres is cultivated.
Due to steep slope of the fields, lack of poor irrigation system, lack of good vegetation in and around the village caused frequent occurrence of landslides and soil erosions. Such occurrences have resulted in declining soil fertility each passing year, poor crop yields, less availability of fodder and ultimately discouraging farmers to cultivate the crops.
In addition, village also faces problem of human wildlife conflict, whatever minimal crops they cultivate are damaged by wild animals. Also, villagers are heavily dependent on nearby forest for firewood and fodder which has resulted in deforestation and poses huge threat in drying of community water sources. Recognizing the problem/threat it poses to the village, the GEF SGP in partnership with the group carried out the project to rehabilitate agriculture land and enhance rural livelihood.

Project Objectives and Key activities
? To rehabilitate degraded land and improve soil fertility by minimizing top soil erosion through establishment of different sustainable land management technologies and practices;
? Enhance community capacity to stabilize/counteract to such problems in the future;
? Mitigate human wildlife conflict through sustainable practices
? Enhancing rural cash income generation through large scale mustard cultivation and marketing and
? Protection of water sources and catchment areas through plantation, fencing and capacity development of the communities.
