Demonstration and Promotion of Clean Energy and Adaptation Technologies for Improved Household Agricultural Production

The Bana Project is a Centre for care of orphaned and vulnerable children. Among its core programmes are the weekly feeding programme and sessions for equipping the children with survival skills. With SGP support the Centre was able to install a biogas digester, start a piggery project, and install a solar system for water pumping and with contribution from the Ministry of Forestry and Land Reclamation constructed a tank to harvest water from the roof. These results were achieved through a project titled ?Demonstration and Promotion of clean energy technologies and water harvesting techniques for improved household agricultural production?. The challenges still facing the Centre are that vegetable production has failed dismally for the past two years due to severe drought and waterlogging caused by excessive rainfall that came very late in the year. The installed solar system just pumps water and does not have the capacity to meet the lighting and other energy needs of the Centre. The harnessed roof water and the fertilizer from the bio-digester are not being put to good use while the envisaged food production improvement is still a challenge. The proposed intervention will focus on augmentation of the installed solar system to demonstrate the full potential of solar power; and installation of a greenhouse to counteract the effects of climate change on vegetable production. Capacity building in business management will also be a major component of the project.

Project sustainability

- Skills development and strong linkages with local government authorities; other civil society organizations and relevant government department have been key in facilitating sustainability of the achieved results over the long term. - The income generation component of the project has been a welcome change which has motivated the team to put more effort into the project. - Organization has no hired staff, all members are hands.

Gender Focus

About 90% of of the organizations's membership of 48 is women with men taking up the remining 10%. Orphaned and vulnerable children are the targetted community group.

Capacity - Building Component

Lack of business management skills was identified as a challenge for the Centre during the appraisal mission. Capacity building in this area will be one of the key activities. Vegetable production to supplement the Centre's weekly feeding programme still remains a challenge due to drought and flooding during to heavy rains. Through SGP intervention, the Centre will be introduced to greenhouse technology and be capacitated to put the fertilizer generated from biogas production and water from roof water harvesting, to productive use.

Notable Community Participation

The Bana Project is an NGO whose main preoccupation is care for orphaned and vulnerable children. The Centre encourages that children stay with relatives in a family setting and only come to the Centre for the weekly feeding programme and other services and for learning about the environment and strategies to combat its degradation. The local authorities through which the contact with GEF SGP was established, will continue to provide guidance and secuirity as required.

Policy Influence

The Grantee whose membership is more than 90% women received a recognition award from the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology in recognition of their involvement in energy and climate change related activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Through links established with a local radio station, and events organized by the UN, The SGP and others, the grantee displays and shares experiences. Links have also been established with the local Agricultural Resource Centre and makes use of the extension services provided including marketing of the produce.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

To make full use of the products of the installed biogas production system and the vast piece of barren land owned by the Centre, a 192 m2 greenhouse was installed to counteract the effects of climate change on vegetable production. 22 women and 4 men received training on greenhouse vegetable production and are ably running the activity for income generation. Big supermarkets in the city have been supplied with fresh green peppers and other fresh vegetable produce for generating revenue for the Centre. This is complemented by a small but viable piggery project.

Project Results

- The solar system installed at the Centre was augmented to demonstrate the full potential of solar power. The Centre now uses solar energy to power appliances such as heaters for warming, refrigerators for storage of food stuffs and audio visual equipment for trainings held at the Centre.

- To make full use of the products of the installed biogas production system and the vast piece of barren land owned by the Centre, a 192 m2 greenhouse was installed to counteract the effects of climate change on vegetable production. The kit was acquired through with the Ministry of Trade with installation and training on operation and production management provided by Amiran Kenya. 22 women and 4 men who are members of the organization benefitted from the training and are ably managing the production. The Different kinds of vegetables are produced to generate income to support the feeding programme of the Centre. Big supermarkets in the city have been supplied with fresh green peppers and other fresh vegetable produce for generating revenue for the Centre.

- Through links established with Sentebale members of the grantee have undergone training in book-keeping and record keeping to enable them to run vegetable production initiative as a profitable business.
