Minimizing the impact of waste on the Environment through the reduction of Plastics, Aluminum Cans, and Glass Bottles in Landfills in South Eleuthera
The project by The One Eleuthera Foundation and South Eleuthera Emergency Partners seek to:
1. Decrease garbage by reducing the amount of plastics, aluminum cans and glass bottles in landfills in South Eleuthera: Plastics and aluminum cans will be weighed and shipped to Cans For Kids, a nonprofit recycling organization located in New Providence, where they will be further directed for recycling internationally. Further, glass bottles will be sorted and either shipped to the brewery in New Providence, used in block making, used by local artists in craft work or made available to locals who use them for the purpose of preserving tomatoes, peppers and others goods.
2. Educate the public, especially primary school students about recycling and its benefits to the community: Awareness will take place through advertisements, presentations, public events, volunteer opportunities and other activities. This will focus largely on primary school students as we have observed that they are more successful at influencing their parents, guardians and other adults.
3. Provide a more convenient means for members of the community to recycle: This will encourage communities to put education into action by recycling using the recycle bins that will be available at the five primary schools throughout South Eleuthera and during major public event. As a part of this, South Eleuthera Emergency Partners? current collection facility will be strengthened in its capacity to collect, sort, temporarily store and further distribute materials to be recycled.
