Improving the livelihood of the local communities of Palau through an effective Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) network
Since the implementation of PAN MPAs, very few information have been collected on (1) ecological data on MPAs effectiveness and (2) the perception of these MPAs by the local communities. However, this information is highly needed for conservation managers and coordinators to make adjustments on protection legislations, and to ensure that MPAs are well enforced and respected by the local communities. This study will have two approaches including socio-economic and ecological monitoring surveys. The main objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of PAN MPAs and the perception that local communities have toward them 6 states of Palau.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Community meetings will also be held for traditional male leaders and traditional female leaders of the communities involved. Women and youth will also be involved in the survey interview process as subsets of the overall community. Of those three community members that will be trained in socioeconomic monitoring data collection methods, one will be male and another will be a female, to ensure that the data collection process involves both males and females.
Notable Community Participation
This project will increase community engagement and empowerment through ecological and socioeconomic monitoring and research. Ecological surveys will include training workshops focusing on training State level PAN Conservation Officers on ecological MPA survey methods, data entry, data analysis and report generation including communication of findings. Socioeconomic surveys will also measure the local communities? level of awareness regarding the MC and PAN, and will also measure the impact of MPAs on the livelihoods of communities.
