Climate Change mitigation through the promotion of low carbon technologies and capacity development among people with disabilities

UDEK is an NGO that was registered in June 2004. Its a national network that assist 102 Disabled Person. With heavy presence in the Mt. Kenya region, UDEK targets both men and women to mitigate climate change through various initiatives like: promotion of low carbon technologies at community level through improved stoves, encourage use of solar energy in off grid areas and tree planting. The Disabled Persons Organization and persons with disabilities will be involved in all stages of panning and implementation of the project to give them a sense of ownership to the whole process and effective participation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Formal or informal training of the localized artisans who are PWDs in Improved Stove making, installing and maintaining Solar kits Systems will ensure sustainability of the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Photography will be used to capture all the activities. Brochures/ booklets will be used to document key climate change strategies and the lessons learnt upon its completion which can be used by other counties. Documentary updates will be sent to the Development Partner before the whole report is compiled. Electronic copies bearing GEF SGP Logos after the commissioning of the program shall be sent to the Donor before printing is done to ensure that they are authentic.

Notable Community Participation

UDEK is a network of Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs) with presence in Mount Kenya Region. These DPOs comprise of Church groups, Women?s groups, Youth groups etc. These groups have in past been useful in organizing meetings in which UDEK engaged their members in various developmental issues hence during this project they will be its entry point to various places in Mount Kenya Region (Laikipia, Nyeri and Kirinyaga Counties).

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

UDEK will target 50 women and 40 men with disabilities who run a kiosk in an off grid area. They will be supplied with the solar kits with 7 mobile charging points. The light will help them extend their working hours at the kiosks while the mobile charging points will give them an extra revenue stream. The Solar kit will also be used at home hence reduce the use of kerosene in the off grid areas.

Gender Focus

Women with disabilities are disadvantaged at two levels: ? Women with disabilities either use their children to collect firewood (thereby reducing their time for studies) or buy firewood with their meager resources. ? The traditional three-stone fireplace creates many hazardous particles. The particles from the smoke can give rise to acute respiratory infections among people who are in contact with the smoke. These people are mainly women, children and infants. Respiratory infections account for 26% of reported deaths in Kenya (MOH 2010). There is a strong link between Acute Respiratory Infections and indoor air pollution The project will ? Decrease firewood collection time, hence women with disabilities will spend more time on other important tasks for their livelihood. ? Trim down expenses incurred in buying firewood by women with disability. ? Reduce adverse health effects associated with indoor air particulate matter inhalation from the smoke.
