Ningxia Yanchi County is one of the poor areas of Liupan Mountain area identified by the state government.The project site- Ya?er Gou Village is located in the farthest western part of Yanchi County.The village is a typical agricultural and pastoral area and the farmland here are all dry land and the main crops are corn, buckwheat, potatoes, millet, beans and sunflower for self-supply. Animal husbandry is mainly Ningxia-Tan-sheep breeding,which is the main source of income for local people, accounting for more than 65% of their total income, which is $520 per year per capita.
Main Problems:
The project site is facing problems of drought, water shortage,lacking of resources, high energy consumption and severe grassland desertification. Due to the geographic location, the temperature of the project site is relatively low and the winter season lasts seven months, which requires a large quantity of energy consuming for heating. Currently, the local people use firewood and coal for heating and cooking, which increases the carbon emission and also firewood- cutting directly damage the fragile ecological environment and cause the desertification.
Solutions/activities:
1.conduct participatory investigation and mobilize the villagers to fully participate the project;
2.disseminate knowledge of environmental protection and promote low carbon lifestyle by training and especially by introduction of the Handbook of Energy-saving and Emissions Reduction released by the Ministry of Science and Technology;
3. install 150 energy-saving stoves and 210 energy-saving heating system;
4. project outreach to raise public awareness on energy conservation and promote low carbon lifestyle;
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. 300 people trained on climate change and energy conservation, among them 20% are women;
2. increase energy efficiency of heating system and cooking facilities by 70%; reduce 450 tons of CO2 emission per year and save $24609 fuel cost.
3. Project results reach over 1000 people.
