Community Addressing Climate Change at Shichangyu Village of Beijing
Community Addressing Climate Change at Shichangyu Village of Beijing
Miyun County is Beijing?s important drinking water protection area, and it is also where the Miyun Reservoir is located. Forest management and protection as well as community development and stability around the Reservoir can safeguard the sustainable social and economic development of the capital. According to local economic and ecological planning in Miyun County, resource-saving and environment-friendly development is highlighted, of which forestry will play an important role. 13 km away from the Miyun Reservoir, Shichangyu Village is among its key protection areas. In recent years, many well-educated young villagers have in cities to do labor work, which restricts development of local forestry and other industries.
Development of local forestry and communities lies in how to protect forestry resources through sustainable forest management, to improve stand structures and enhance multi-functions of forests, such as carbon sequestration and source water conservation, and reduce carbon emissions from agriculture and forestry as well as improve the communities climate change mitigation and integrated development capacity through skill training and awareness education.
Main problems
(1) Low climate change awareness, and lack of knowledge of how to protect, manage and utilize forest, among local residents;
(2) Low efficiency in development and utilization of forest and agricultural resources ;
(3) Low capacity of forest ecosystems in terms of increasing carbon sinks and reducing emissions;
(4) Lack of infrastructure basis for rural low-carbon industry.
Solutions/activities:
(1)Implement forest management to improve forest quality and carbon sequestration ability;
(2) Build one forest waste recycling demonstration site; Corn straw and debris from forest management will be used to be processed into biomass fuel;
(3)Build forest culture experience and exhibition center to outreach and demonstrate forest functions including carbon sequestration for general public and local villagers;
(4)outreach and train local community residents and urban citizens on low-carbon action and environment protection;
Anticipated results/outcomes:
(1)1500 mu of local forest is well managed and maintained, with an expected increase of over 2000 tons of forest carbon sinks;
(2) 1000 ton biomass fuel will be used to replace coal, which will reduce 1600 tons of CO2 estimations per year;
(3) The forest culture experience and exhibition center will attract more than 1000 visitors each year. More than 50 villagers (13 females) will be engaged in indirect services and selling products, with annual income increasing RMB1,000 per capita;
(4) 260 ppeople from local communities and 100 people from BFS members will obtain knowledge of low carbon development and environmental protection.
