Living in the Landscape: Building new relationships with Nature in the Jequitinhonha Valley Region.

Promote and monitor environmental initiatives developed in the landscape that covers 14 rural communities. Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Capacity - Building Component

Hold meetings in 14 communities for families to mobilize and set goals; conduct workshops training technicians and monitoring rural leaders; conduct monitoring on advising preparation reports, income statements and institucional relations; Conduct business with several families from surrounding communities in a community landscape chosen by themselves to exchange experiences and evaluations of the project; Conduct markets research in the region, productive agricultural planning and include solidary economic strategies.

Notable Community Participation

The project will cover 14 rural communities defined as the landscape for execution of the Satoyama methodology. Families belonging to municipalities of Turmalina and Veredinha in the Upper Jequitinhonha Valley in the state of Minas Gerais will actively participate in farming activities in hope of integrating the CAV actions in building a strategic plan for the communities. Families will work towards developing sustainable management of natural resources, social technologies and produce agroecological skills for sustenance.

Gender Focus

The project will include 414 individuals whose gender caracteristics are almost equally balanced.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

This project will work towards collaborating to expand agroecological and sustainable knowledge to contribute to the community organization, efficient management and acheiving results from integrating the landscape. It also proposes to monitor, evaluate the balance between the environment and interpersonal relationships.

Project Results

- 362 families were mobilized, corresponding to 216 women (81 young and 32 elderly) and 328 men (105 young and 52 elderly);
- Eleven community committees have been set up to monitor projects in communities;
- 118 families assisted directly with technical assistance through the project;
? At least 100 families are producing from planning
? 106 productive projects approved by the rotating fund for the purchase of inputs, chowers and animals, water management technologies, etc .;
? Analysis and correction of soil to 28 properties;
? 140 families assisted by AFAVE in organizing production for the Veredinha fair
- 445 people participated in training activities:
? 24 rural leaders and 6 technicians trained in project financial management, monitoring of indicators;
? 29 young people and 3 technicians trained in small projects;
? 39 young people trained in radio and sound design.
? 1 young and a young EFA alumni participated in a two-month exchange in Ecuador on the bio-intensive agro-ecological production system;
? 25 people participated in an exchange in the south of Minas about organic certification with GSP and payment for environmental services;
? Participation in exchange with five other countries in Chile in conjunction with the ISPN on combating desertification
? 25 farmers and two technicians participated in an exchange in Berilo, MG on the municipal law for the management of eucalyptus and landscape recovery.
? Diverse exchanges between landscape communities to exchange experiences.

- The project promoted the institutional strengthening of 7 grassroots organizations in the region, all with their current documentation and all the most qualified directorates in relation to project management and association management. But due to the low level of education in the region, this challenge is still very great.
