Children as catalysts of environmental change
Context
A sustainable development presupposes changes in values and attitudes to the environment and its preservation. Educational system must play an important part in promoting environmental awareness, understanding and protection. Many environmental problems are immediate and there is a strong argument in support of the need to educate tomorrow's environmental stewards, the children and especially their parents who have the direct power/influence to introduce policies and practices essential for immediate global environmental change. The influence of children on their parents has received nominal attention within the social sciences. There is some evidence to suggest that children, despite their minority status, can act as catalysts for social change both in the community and home (e.g. Sutherland and Ham, 1992; Kruger, 1992; Glass, 1986; Lerner and Spanier, 1978).
About the Proponent
C-Sema is a national organisation whose main objective is to create and provide avenues for children to speak. This is achieved through the National Child Helpline; Happy/Sad Opinion Boxes and Sema Magazine. Information, education and access to social services are C-Sema?s core business. C-Sema believes that an informed child will grow an environment-responsible citizen in Tanzania. On 3rd January, 2013 the much awaited Agreement Between Ministry of Community Development, Gender & Children (MCDGC) and C-Sema for Operationalisation of the National Child Helpline (CHL) was officially signed to establish the first free-telephone service for children in need of social services in Tanzania. This contract mandates C-Sema a platform to work throughout the country in fulfilling its objectives.
Project?s Primary Objective
To lay foundations for fully informed and active participation of children in protection of environment in their communities
