Project supported up to 15,253 beneficiaries to adopt and apply sustainable land, wetland and water management practices in an area covering 44,200 hectares surrounding Kamirantumbu wetland in Luuka District. The project raised awareness on wetlands degradation among the stakeholders including resource users at community level among others.
Communities around Kamirantumbu wetland ecosystem being mainly subsistence farmers were mobilized and provided material and technical support for community based initiatives aimed at (a) promoting sustainable utilization of wetlands resources; (b) development of alternatives to use of wetlands resources; and (c) promoting sustainable land water management practices. Like in many other natural resources, there existed user conflicts and the project also built communities? capacity in conflict resolution.

The project supported boundary demarcation through planting trees of trees along the wetland banks and on individual farm boundaries; provided soil and water conservation training of beneficiaries to reduce soil erosion; supported beneficiaries in setting up alternative livelihood options that have gradually reversed dependence on wetland resources; and developed the wetland management plan currently being implemented by community associations/groups, and endorsed and monitored at district and sub-county levels, with technical support and supervision from the wetland inspection department.
