Garden Royong
Food security, food prices, food safety, food waste: Urban communities play a big role in each of
these problems because they have been disconnected from nature and sustainable agricultural
practices. We aim to address this problem by empowering young, urban communities with the skills
and tools to grow their own food; in the process, helping them become more resilient in the city,
appreciate nature and ultimately foster more sustainable living habits.
The project will be based in urban areas within Wilayah Persekutuan and Selangor, and will involve
urban community based organisations such as Kindergartens, Schools, Orphanages and Shelter
Homes.
Objectives
1. Transform urban community spaces into productive foodscapes
2. Increase community resilience against upcoming problems such as drought and water crises
3. Increase awareness and conscientiousness in the food that they eat
Activities
1. To build sustainable edible garden systems together with the community
2. To train leaders within each community, how to manage and maintain their edible garden
community spaces
3. To teach participants how to grow and cook the food from their edible gardens
Expected Output
1. 10 edible gardens built with and by community based organisations around Kuala Lumpur that
will be used as productive demonstration sites for future gardens
2. 10 committed community leaders trained
