Policy Impact

Awareness programs will be conducted for the farmer community on climate change and adaptation measures.

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity development of Mahindagama community to engage in sustainable agricultural and livelihoods development activities to minimize adverse effects of climate change. Knowledge and skills of farmers on eco-friendly farming systems and organic home gardening will be developed. Farmer training and awareness programs are done through farmer field schools. Awareness programs will be conducted on climate change and adaptation measures. Skills training programs will be conducted to promote dairy farming for self employment activities.

Project sustainability

Dairy farming was promoted among the beneficiaries since the area is very suitable for cattle rearing. 10 cows were distributed among the beneficiaries for dairy farming. The beneficiaries are bound by an agreement with the SLRCS to ensure the continuity of the cattle distribution programme. According to the agreement 1st calf of every cow must to be donated to another beneficiary in the queue. SLRCS expects to provide cows for all interested beneficiaries through this method. SLRCS has given grants of USD 173.61 for 24 beneficiaries to purchase machinery and equipment needed for their new business ventures such as cement brick manufacturing, home sewing businesses and fodder production. These business will develop over time and new employment opportunities will be generated for the youth and females. Big onion cultivation was introduced to the beneficiaries to provide optional income when paddy cultivation is difficult in the drought periods. Seed paddy production was promoted and a CBO was formed. A community seed bank was established under the CBO. This measure would provide quality seed paddy for the beneficiaries.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Income from paddy cultivation will be increased with the increase of paddy harvest by new eco friendly farming systems. 75 Home gardens will be established with women and youth participation.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Micro financial activities will be implemented by the CBO to help members for alternative livelihood measures. Poor families will be involved in savings and taking small scale loans.

Notable Community Participation

Regional farmer community is directly participated in the project. Their skills and knowledge will be developed in order to address the prevailing difficulties in the area. CBOs will be formed among farmer community and small groups are formed with youth and women participation.

Gender Focus

Regional women will be empowered by taking their full participation in socio economic activities together with adaptation methods to adverse effects of climate change.75 eligible women will be selected and trained for organic home gardening activities.

Project Results

1. The trees planted at the river banks would provide conducive habitats for the point endemic fish species Systomus asoka.

2. Regional communities have been informed about the threats to Systomus asoka and the importance of its conservation.

3. Economic development of 60 beneficiary families has been achieved by the increase in the income due to the value addition of the kitul products.

4. Training on organic farming, soil conservation, integrated pest management and composting has been provided for the beneficiaries.

5. A treacle processing centre has been established. Doorstep purchasing of the sweet toddy is practiced as the transportation on the hillside rural roads is extremely difficult for the beneficiaries. The sweet toddy is processed and value added Kitul treacle is produced.
