Capacity development and knowledge management for improved environmental conservation
MCDI proposes to fill this gap by developing an appropriate training programme to enhance the capacity of SGP grantees in designing, managing, monitoring and evaluating environmental conservation projects in an effective and participatory manner. This Project will be under Component 1 of the current SGP Framework of activities as per the September 2013 Request for Proposals that was published in the Daily Nation newspaper.
Sharing lessons and experiences is another way of enhancing the capacities of groups to implement sustainable conservation projects. However, there are limited opportunities and forums for these groups to learn from each other. MCDI will organize two Eco-Fairs in the Mt. Kenya and Coast clusters of SGP to promote the sharing of information and experiences among groups and with the general public. The Project will also produce a Lessons Learned booklet through a participatory ?write-shop? process, whereby the community representatives will be facilitated to analyze their experiences along various themes and to produce a draft document which shall be edited, designed and printed.
The Project will design a web-site specifically designed to encourage the sharing of information among community groups. The use of social media shall be encouraged, while the communities will be encouraged to write magazine articles that shall be produced in the Environmental Barometer Magazine. This magazine targets community groups implementing conservation projects and is a good way to encourage groups to document and share their experiences.
MCDI has adequate experience and capacity to implement this Project because its members are drawn from various professions and they provide these skills to the organization due to their commitment to enhancing the capacity of communities to manage natural resources sustainably.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
MCDI will ensure that the community participates in designing projects, managing them and monitoring them and also in communicating their experiences with others. Communities will also be able to communicate with policy makers through the different media.
Gender Focus
One of the concerns of MCDI is to ensure that the needs and concerns of women and men of various socio-economic strata and age-groups are captured. Gender balance will be a requirement for any workshop and the views of women and men will be sought during monitoring visits. If necessary, single-sex focus group discussions will be held to ensure that diverse members of the communities are comfortable in providing information about the project and also in sharing their lessons and experiences.
