Community-led conservation of Marsh crocodile & Smooth Coated Otter
Project Objective and Proposed Activity
The project is aimed at conserving Marsh Crocodile and Smooth Coated Otter in the area of lower Nara Canal wetland, Makhi forest and Chotiari Reservoir that will also supplement to other fauna & flora life of the area.
Objective1: To contribute on Marsh crocodile & Smooth coated otter conservation efforts in Nara and Chotiari wetland Complex through awareness raising activities.
Activities under objective
1.1 Assessment MoU & NoC from District Govt. Sanghar
1.2 NoC from Sindh wildlife Department
1.3 Assessment of the population status and habitat for the Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter in Nara and Chotiari wetland Complex.
1.4 Formation & organize 3 local community organization to create sense of ownership for Conserving and protecting Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter.
1.5 5 Community meetings for mobilizing of local organized communities organizations for creating sense of ownership for Conserving and protecting Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter.
1.6 4 Community Eco guards to protect Hotspot areas of Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter to avoid poaching and hunting of these species.
1.7 Organize 1 training events for local communities to avoid poaching and hunting of these species and sustainable use of Natural Resource Management
1.8 Organize 1 ?cultural events? to promote environmental awareness through traditional folk wisdom of Nara and Makhi forest area
1.9 Promote Environmental Education in High Schools in which Nature conservation clubs will be established in 2 Schools at Nara and Chotiari wetland complex
1.10 Celebration of 2 significant Environmental days in Schools by involving communities and other stakeholders
Objective 2: To Improve institutional capacity and awareness for sustainable conservation and collaboration with stakeholders for creating linkages at local, policy, planning and decision-making level.
Activities under objective
2.1 To arrange 2 project orientation meetings with project stakeholders including govt. line departments (wildlife, zoological survey, Zoology department of universities, forest, irrigation, agriculture, fisheries, livestock) NGOS, Academia and Media to enhance awareness and seek their support for project implementation.
2.2 Consultation meeting with all stakeholders particularly Sindh wildlife department to identify visible and invisible threats to the population of Crocodile and smooth coated otter species.
2.3 To mobilize and establish Nara and Chotiari conservation forum for sustainable conservation of the Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter.
2.4 To arrange 4 Quarterly meetings of ?Nara and Chotiari Conservation forum?
2.5 To enhance the capacity building by providing 1 training events for wildlife staff and community Eco guards on the significant role of these species in ecology and how to protect worldwide threatened these species in habiting the area.
2.6 To organize 1 Regional workshop for all stakeholders and local communities of Nara and wetland complex to develop future action plan for the conservation and restoration of species? habitat.
2.7 To strengthen networking with international organizations working specifically on threatened crocodiles and otters
Objective 3: To disseminate the information regarding Marsh crocodiles and Smooth coated otter and their conservation issues/efforts in Nara and Chotiari wetland Complex.
Activities under objective
3.1 Publication and dissemination of posters and brochures for awareness raising
3.2 To produce factsheets on Marsh crocodile and smooth coated otter
3.3 To install 4 sign boards with Environmental & conservation messages in project area
5. Project Strategy
The community-led marsh crocodiles and smooth coated otters? conservation project will be implemented by project team of CRC in Chotiari and Nara wetland complex, Sindh.
? The implementing organization has sufficient capacity to lead this project as the organization has already has base in project area and networking with communities , line department and local notables of the area.
? Project activities will be started with the recruitment of the project staff. Positions will be announced in local newspapers in order to maintain transparency of HR systems. The recruited staff will be oriented well before starting field based activities.
? Project Office will be established at Hyderabad city from activities will be carried out in Nara and Chotiari wetland complex
? Project team in the leadership of Project Manager will start project orientation meetings with lines departments of the government, media persons and community will be motivated to play their role for conservation of these vulnerable species as well as natural resources.
? Trainings of the local wildlife officials will be arranged for enhancement of technical capacity to deal with the species and avoid its hunting and protect the habitats.
? Project team will facilitate the community activists from different villages of the particular activity at village level called Community Organizations (COs). The proposed COs would explore resources for materializing the plans and seeking support to initiate the project activities.
? 2 Community Eco guards will be hired to protect Hotspot areas of Marsh Crocodile and smooth coated otter to avoid poaching and hunting of these species which will encourage local communities to involve in conservation activities.
? Conservation Nature Club will be formed at 2 high schools in the project area
? Nara and Chotiari Conservation Forum will be established
? CRC will support in promoting Human Resource Cadre equipping with technical and managerial expertise.
? The meetings with all the stakeholders will be arranged frequently for experience sharing.
? Learning and experience from the GEF / UNDP would be taken from time to time as the guiding principles and successful stories and strategies would be translated in the local context to converge the outcome with global development goals.
? Advocacy and sensitization campaign will be launched by the community against the poaching and hunting of these species in particular and protecting environment in general.
