Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
ADPA-S/L has trained, qualified, experience staff whose capacities are built to implement the proposed project successfully through the use of result based management strategies and team work. The Knowledge based management strategy will be achieved through (1) the involvement of community people, target beneficiaries, Community authorities, law enforcement bodies, security apparatus, Environmental Conservation Society (ECS), Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), The mining companies, the Kenema District council in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of project activities. (2) Working with Government (EPA) to develop comprehensive guidelines for mining activities taken in to consideration environmental protection and the health and safety of the community people. (3)Working in collaboration with EPA to enforce/ influence policies that will address environmental degradation and invest revenue in to environmental conservation or education. The project will be implemented in collaboration with Kenema District Council (being the highest political authority at the district level their involvement will help influence positive changes on the right of their people/communities that are being affected); Environment Protection Agency (Government focal Agency that enforces environmental laws and policies and ensures that mining companies adhere to Environmental, Social sustainable forest Management plans
Notable Community Participation
ADPA-SL will be working with the community stakeholders in the four targeted communities within the chiefdom. Key stakeholders including teachers, chiefs, Religious leaders, tribal heads, societal heads, mining companies, security apparatus and the general public will be involved in the project life cycle from the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of project through their active participation in all stages during assessment, meetings, practical demonstration activities such as tree planting, agricultural activities, land reclamation, reforestation, sustainable forest and land management practices, Capacity building, monitoring, supervision and evaluation of project activities for sustainability . The majority of the population is dependent on the environment for their livelihoods and mining and are as well depleting the environment through their activities. This result in an increase in the poverty status of community dwellers especially the rural poor. A critical first step in promoting a greater responsiveness of security and sustainable land reclamation, reforestation and forest management services for the communities is by raising public awareness of the underlying causes of a decline in the quality of their environment due to mining, deforestation, livelihoods activities, their rights and responsibilities in managing their local environment and their God given right in benefiting from these resources within their communities rather than just the influential. In ensuring efficient and effective monitoring, evaluation and sustainability of project activities, ADPA-S/L will involve community stakeholders in the formation of structures in communities to supervise, monitor and sensitize community members on the effects of deforestation and land degradation through workshops, trainings, Radio discussions to understand the project impact
