Project aim: Based on example of pond fish farming in Amanotkel village show its potential in getting qualitative fish products for proving for local communities as a method of decreasing impact on biodiversity and natural resources. Project tasks: - Create demonstrational 5ha pond farm with 2 fish ponds for breeding tradable fish - Hold informational-educational campaign for local population on promotion fish farming as a good way to provide for their families with fish products and decreasing anthropogenous load on water resources and its biodiversity Project results: - Created 5 ha ponds for fish farming - 2 collective farms and one sole trader took part in the project - Not less than 100 people benefited from the project - Not less than 1000 people informed on project methods and results
Notable Community Participation
Local communities of Amanotkel settlement actively involved in project realization from the very beginning and are the main implementers of all project activities on ponds creation, fish farming and development of natural resources conservation activities. Collective farms employees, sole traders of the district make their input in project with automotive engineering and equipment, fertilizers for ponds, dam repair and refrigerating equipment for fish.
Capacity - Building Component
Project is also aimed on teaching locals fish farming. About 60 representatives of local communities regularly take part in project seminars, round tables. Besides, special methodological guide issued for locals? self-education needs.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Locals trained on high technologies of fish farming, specifically on breeding common species of traditional region?s tradable fish ? silver carp, grass carp and carp. Trainings held in every-day intensive practical work conditions so that locals got great skills in fish farming and can do it themselves without harming nature. Prepared specialists are needed and now work in NGO, as sole traders, in collective farms etc. Besides, as a result of their work, locals got qualitative fish on good price.
Gender Focus
In the project-leading NGO are mainly women, but project specialists attracted are both women and men. Gender equality is one of the project principles and both parties involved on an equal base.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Locals were regularly informed on project progress via publications and speeches in mass media, on meetings. Special booklets and posters developed based on project materials disseminated among locals. For the assurance of publicity the public monitoring of the project activities take place in the format of task and plans discussions and realized activities debriefing with participation of all interested parties.
Policy Impact
Pond farms are objects of long-term functioning with strategic aim to conserve important wetlands and its biodiversity. This pilot project creates a base for further development of nature protection activities in this field on state level.
