Notable Community Participation

The Jequitinhonha Valley is located in Varedinha and its economy is based on small commerce along with agricultural and subsidence characteristics. The region is characterized by big Eucalypti monoculture that produce negative effects on the land. Local families struggle with the the region´s water shortages due to its consequences in consumption, productions and permanence in the rural area. The project will improve the quality of live of the local families through capacity building, information and better water resources. Approximately 116 families will benefit directly.

Replication of project activities

The projects ativities are being replicated and improved by the COMDEKS Brazil, which is being implemented in the same region, in partnership with AFAVE.

Policy Influence

The studants became aware of their water issues and the relation of those with huge areas of eucaliptus plantations in their region. They created a group to struggle to save the Fanado River and are actively participating to influence local policies.

Project Results

14 communities and 186 families benefited from the project;
Realization of the First Meeting and Fair for Creole Seeds where 18 variety of local seeds were exchanged between farmers of 6 municipalities;
50 small farmers trained in agro-ecological production and use of native seeds;
15 small farmers trained in seed banks management;
water resources management course for 28 people resulting in the elaboration and community regiment signature use of natural resources of the community;
Construction of 7 barraginhas, 7 containment basins and 14 terraces in Boiada Community (number greater than planned) - 10.4 million liters of stored water;
6 native forest areas demarcated for conservation in Boiada and 17 families organized in joint effort for the two springs fencing, a total of 3ha protected;
30 families received technical assistance during the project;
19 variety of native seeds are being stored and available to small farmers;
Local and native seeds field was implemented in the Veredinha EFA containing 19 varieties;
Creation of the Boiada Community Association;
Income generated by the project monthly average USD 120.00
