Let’s Clean Kathmandu and Make Zero Waste City
Let’s Clean Kathmandu and Make Zero Waste City
This pilot project, will have far reaching benefits for the environment and the residents who depend on it for their livelihoods, especially those in lower classes who suffer the most from environmental degradation. The processes of waste reduction and waste to resource included in our project will not only create income for the participants, but will provide environmental benefits, like clean air, soil, and water ?greatly improving health and quality of life. The Pilot Project will serve as a working model of the efficacy of the Zero Waste Concept, which can then be replicated throughout the whole city of Kathmandu, cleaning and making it a Zero Waste city, which then can serve as a model for other cities in Nepal and around the world.

In Boudhanath, 1,000 households participate in the waste segregation and garbage removal pilot phase of the project. The organic waste from each household will be picked up 3 times a week (non degradable once per week), preventing the waste from accumulating and creating a foul environment. Containers for segregating organic waste from inorganic wastes will be provided to each household. Once waste is segregated, the non degradable, like plastics, metal, and paper will be clean and available for sale to rag-pickers and for the conversion of ?Waste to Resource?, a method of repurposing inorganic waste into handicrafts, that can then be used in the household or sold for income. The ?Zero Waste Center? in Boudhanath will be the hub of resource education, product development, and design innovation.

One of the major component of Zero waste project is Resource Recovery Facility where organic waste (about 70% of total waste ) will be processed to make biogas to electricity and composting, so that concept of landfill site requirement could be wiped out. Pragya Seeds Nepal selected Alapot for the Resource Recovery Facility after doing baseline study in surrounding area. Partnership with local organization at Alapot, the grantee has leased 6 ropani of land for Resource Recovery Facility, which is not enough even though in first phase with the help of Germany Embassy (Small Grant Program) able to establish 50 cubic meter biogas plant, which could digest 300 kg waste per day and will produce 3 KWH electricity per day and this electricity will be used for irrigation purpose.

Thus SGP project will support in capacity building of locals and awareness raising participating household to segregate the waste.
