Additional funds derived through Movement of national land and agriculture reform (MONLA) of Sweden for further community awareness and development work

Project sustainability

All the community development activities and catchment maintenance will be continued via CBOs and they will sustain the funds through interests from the micro credit system, Community contribution and member fees. Student vigilant groups will also continue the biodiversity protection activities and they will be motivated through continuous Support of PCDF

Capacity - Building Component

Conduct training programmes, workshops, on environmental education and Bio-Diversity conservation. Each Community based organization undergoes biodiversity exchange visits. CBO?s conduct monthly progress review meetings for the leaders of the Community based organizations. Two members of the organization and a community member participated in a two day capacity building workshop held recently.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Distribution of plant species for home gardens among famers to make sustainable income while conserving the Bio diversity. Restored water supply for the agricultural areas belonging to beneficiaries and Credit provision for income generation activity. As this project will fulfill the basic infrastructure requirement of the community it will both save their time and money which they can invest in other modes of income generation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Facilitate school environmental catalyst group and their capacity of delivering the message of conservation effectively to the beneficiaries. Conducted one day awareness trainings on regional biodiversity for students and for community members Addressed the global environmental issues and relate them to the local scenario during CBO meetings. Used video clips and internal sessions among CBOs to share their past experience

Policy Impact

Final results of the increase Bio-Diversity, Trees, quality of drinking water could influence the policy advocacy activities. Encourage policies in climate change adaptation by conserving a thirteen acre water catchment.

Produced a collective policy document with the collaboration of 50 other local partner organizations and handed it over to the Governor of the UVA province for adaptation

Replication of the catchment restoration process for other identified peripheral plantations with similar status.

Gender Focus

Some of the Community based organizations within the project are led by females. The project gives special support for the grantee families headed by female members. Since the majority of the beneficiaries represent females, they have empowered women by giving them the opportunity of decision making and financial management.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The NGO has decided to collect monthly membership fee of Rs.25.00 from each member for the purpose of managing and maintaining the drinking water system. Each beneficiary who gets Rs.20000 valued sanitary material should contributes by Rs.5000 for the sustainment in future.

Notable Community Participation

There are 300 beneficiaries under the project. About 141 school children receive environmental education and actively contribute as environmental catalysts towards the project. Beneficiaries within the community support water catchment constructions and biodiversity enhancing projects.

Project Results

1. 8.25 hectares of degraded catchments restored and safeguarded from further destruction
2. 1393 of beneficiaries assured with the constant supply of drinking water
3. Improved quality of life and the health of the community by developing the sanitary facilities
4. 473 of people have been made aware of the biodiversity and importance of catchment conservation.
5. A school vigilant group formed and motivated through rewards to continue the awareness development and environmental protection activities
