Community Participation in Biodiversity Management of the Sg. Sepang.
The Sg. Sepang is under the joint management of both the Selangor and Negeri Sembilan state Governments. It supports a large artisanal fishing base within its lower stretch, a significant level of aquaculture activity, both in-stream cage culture as well as shrimp farming, as well as supports a significant level of recreational fishing, both within the river and its immediate surroundings. It has a substantial urban catchment, especially at its lower stretches and agriculture catchment Located at the southern coastal edge of the state of Selangor, the Sg. Sepang forms the boundary with Negeri Sembilan. This particular river is utilised by a numerous and varied stakeholder communities, all of whom have a crucial stake in its sustainability. Due to a lack of a consensual mechanism to enable the various stakeholders to meet and discuss issues of common interest, these communities currently do not work together to ensure the sustainability of the river system on which they all depend. This coupled with the absence of information on the environmental and biodiversity values of the river, there is a fragmented and uncoordinated use of the river, which is likely to undermine its rich environmental quality and productivity. The Persatuan Alam Sekitar Selangor (PASS) is attempting to address the issue by assessing the biodiversity and economic values of the Sg. Sepang, identifying its stakeholders, and conduct activities to empower and organise the riverine communities of the Sg. Sepang working towards sustainable management of Sg. Sepang.
