COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE IN BAHI DISTRICT
COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE IN BAHI DISTRICT
Context:

Like other parts of Central Tanzania, Bahi is facing environmental degradation due to deforestation and overgrazing. Land fertility has declined substantially and area under natural forest is almost non-existent. Deforestation and forest degradation has been caused by land clearing for agriculture and wood fuel particularly charcoal. Under this project, MIGESADO aims at redressing the pathetic environmental situation through wider adoption of biogas plants, rainwater harvesting tanks, and improved firewood stoves. The project will also promote tree planting activities and provide training on how to integrate livestock keeping and farming with the view to realizing sustainable agriculture.

About the NGO:

MIGESADO is a Swahili acronym for ?Miradi ya Gesi ya Samadi Dodoma?, which means, Dodoma Biogas and other Alternative energies. The organization started as a project in 1994. In 1999, it was registered as an NGO. It is operational in Dodoma region but recently, it has spread in Morogoro and Singida regions. The organization supports local communities to combat the problems of deforestation and climate change through promotion of renewable energy technologies, rainwater harvesting techniques and organic farming.

Project Primary Objective:

To combat the effects of climate change through wider adoption of biogas technology and promote application of biogas by-product for improved organic farming.

Implementation Strategies:

? Select 5 villages, which are located adjacent to the only remaining forest in the district.
? Start with community awareness to cultivate project buy-in
? Support tree planting through focus groups
? Select sites for demo projects on biogas, under-ground and surface rainwater tanks, institutional and household improved stoves.
? Manage replication of demo projects
