Identifying Local Communities for Capacity Building Towards Wetlands Conservation.
The rate of wetlands loss is accelerating due to due to unsustainable development, overharvesting and rapid urbanization. Degradation and loss of wetlands not only leads to animal and plant life disappearing, but crucial ecosystem services such provided by these wetlands such as food, clean water and medicines are also diminishing. More wetlands can be conserved and protected when communities, living within or surrounding the wetlands, are empowered in making their own decisions to decide to conserve these wetlands, while at the same time still able to engage in livelihoods that is sustainable for wetlands conservation. The vast majority of daily environmental management decisions depends on local knowledge and is determined by local people?s use of natural resources. The project aims to empower local communities with enhanced capacity for conserving wetlands that links wetlands conservation goals with sustainable livelihoods. Through this project, capacity of local communities can be enhanced allowing them to be part of the sustainable solutions of wetlands conservation and sustainable use.
