Creating Sustainable Communities - Building Local Capacity for Adaptation to Climate Change related to issues such as water shortages, flooding, land slides and coastal erosion.

This project will assist the grantee in designing a project which will allow the community of Laborie to reduce the impact of major rainfall events on soils, infrastructure damage, and adverse impacts on coastal ecosystems. Project activities will include research by local consultants, meetings, workshops, documentation of the process, site assessments, and preparation of the Full Grant Project Proposal.

Project Results

There were delays in project completion due in part to the impacts of Hurricane Tomas in Saint Lucia which served to highlight the need for a CBA project in that area.

At the end of the project, there were a number of conclusions: (i) It was determined that "the area overlooking the Laborie Village is threatened by improper treatment of household water and waste water. The impacts were noted especially during heavy rainfall; (ii) Due to the high level of squatting in the project area, " the householders are unable" and perhaps reluctant "to implement adaptation measures;" (iii) The ability to implement climate adaptation measures is directly related to people's level of disposable income; and (iv) "community education and engagement is critical to addressing CC and related impacts".

Perhaps the most important lesson is the need for greater awareness of CC and its impacts and the exposure to successful case studies where people have been able to mitigate the impacts of CC.

The grantee has produced a Full Grant Project Proposal which was approved for implementation.
