Integrated Approach to Conserve Biodiversity and Improve Livelihood in Adjacent Rural Areas of Lahore
The proposed multi faceted project is of species conservation nature. To impart the community based management practices for conservation of local flora and fauna and their habitat is the main objective of proposed project. The awareness and alternate income generation schemes are the adopted tools. Other project objectives and activities are as below.
Objective 1:
To protect/conserve biodiversity and their habitat through biodiversity management practices in proposed four villages.
Activities:
1. Project inception: recruitment of staff and orientation workshop
2. Conduction of Biodiversity and risk assessment survey
3. Selection of birds species for conservation practices
4. Installation of 300 birds protection nest/wooden homes for protection and breeding purposes
5. Conducting (8) awareness sessions with community members on biodiversity and habitat conservation, about 2400 community members mobilized.
6. Formation of community conservation committees (4 villages).
7. Consultative meetings (04) with local hunters and birds breeders of proposed villages
8. Crow free zone awareness campaign (8) to reduce the increasing number of crows
9. Preparation and sharing of biodiversity documentaries and clippings
10. Biodiversity awareness campaign among school students (12 schools)
11. Student exposure visits (12) to Wildlife park and gardens
12. Celebration of environment day, biodiversity and wildlife day
13. Organizing Biodiversity walk with community members
Objective 2: Provide alternate income generation schemes and community trainings through in-situ conservation practices.
Activities:
1. Establishment of Chuga-ghar, seed bank, resource center, seedling nursery, for promotion of domestic animal farming (ducks, hens, rabbits, quails) by replication and revolving method, kitchen gardening, bird feed alternates, organic products and compost.
2. Distribution of hens, quail, rabbits & ducks for domestic animal/ bird farming for alternate income generation and household food security.
3. Training of women community members (100) regarding organic farming/kitchen gardening and for preparation of birds feed from kitchen and agriculture waste
4. Distribution of seeds, seedling, organic product and implements
5. Plantation of 2500 indigenous trees/plants in rural villages
Objective 3: To advocate relevant government officials regarding implementation of biodiversity action plan
Activities:
1. IEC material produced according to international standards, and shared with stakeholders.
2. Advocacy sessions (04) with official of environment wing, forest and wildlife department, park authorities and planning and development department regarding implementation of illegal hunting laws
3. Advocacy session with wildlife department for preparation and adoption of new biodiversity policy (02).
Objective 4: To involve media for community sensitization and mass awareness
Activities:
1. Media sensitization sessions (2) regarding conservation of natural flora and fauna, biodiversity issues and alternate income generation opportunities
2. Airing of radio programmes/messages and Printing of articles on the local biodiversity situation, risks and available conservation options.
Expected project deliverables
? The community of 4 villages including women and school children mobilized and involved in biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood management.
? The knowledge generated and shared among a large group of stakeholders regarding bio-diversity challenges faced by the semi-rural areas of Lahore and type of conservation options available.
? Local habitat improved/revived with the project support for bird protection, indigenous planting, organic farming and kitchen gardening.
? Relevant govt department officials and stakeholders sensitized about hunting laws implementation and other conservation regulation.
? Media sensitised and involved in highlighting the biodiversity /livelihood issues, and mass awareness raising.
The project will sensitize and train of 2400 population from proposed 04 villages. People relaying on natural resources are trained on adoption of sustainable practices. Gender mainstreaming will ensure that women are properly and effectively represented in all activities. Changes in community-based resource management will result in socioeconomic benefits and improved health and nutrition conditions.
Project progress will be evaluated according to set indicators. Indicators will be verified through MOVs and SMART indicators would be developed for the monitoring of the process as well as achievements of the project with the use of quantitative and qualitative indicators.
The overall project results are:
? Awareness and organization of the local communities, now actively working for betterment of biodiversity in their respective areas.
? Awareness of relevant stakeholders and media about importance of the environment, natural flora and fauna and their habitat
? Community behavior change occurred regarding hunting and selling of bird species.
? Local hunters generating income through alternate earning practices, habitat of birds conserved.
? Sensitized students actively working for the conservation of natural habitat
? Women receiving fresh fruits/vegetables by practicing organic/kitchen farming
? Capacity building of local stakeholders improves the local knowledge and behavior.
However, following specific outputs are expected from the Project
? 2400 population of 4 villages mobilized and aware on biodiversity and habitat conservation
? Habitat of bird species conserved through installed nests and restoration of breeding sites
? 40 local hunters sensitized regarding illegal hunting, poaching and trading of species
? Establishment of Chuga-ghar (for promotion of domestic animal farming by replication and revolving method, establishment of seed bank, literature, organic products and compost)
? Students of 12 schools sensitized regarding biodiversity conservation
? Emergence of alternative income generation sources and improved health and nutrition status of locals through distribution of poultry birds, ducks, quails and rabbits including adoption of in-situ practices for kitchen gardening
? Awareness raised through celebration of National environment, wildlife, biodiversity day
? Women community members (100) trained regarding organic farming and domestic birds/animal raring as sustainable development practices
? Organic farming at the local level improved through distributed seeds and seedlings
? All stakeholders made on-board and linkages developed
? Sensitized Govt. officials, implemented hunting laws and practices
? Media sensitized regarding biodiversity issues of the Lahore district, conservation practices and sustainable livelihood opportunities in low income communities
? Socio-economic activities and tourism promoted through sustainable practices
? Mass awareness raised through radio programs and messages on biodiversity conservation practices
