Promoting Environmental Sustainability and Women Empowerment
The proposed intervention would reduce the usage of fuel wood, improve indoor air quality, health of women and improve economic well being of the communities thereby in 2 union council Nara amazai and Bait galli district Haripur through demonstration, and capacity building of women on metal fuel efficient stoves new technology. The project will also promote agroforestry practices and promote NTFPs to create more diverse, productive, profitable sustainable land use and forest resources thereby. The project would benefit around 2500 households in the target union councils, over the period of two years. The principle objective of the project is to reduce GHG emissions by improving the adoption of the energy efficient products.

Specific Objectives of the project are:

1. Reducing fuel wood consumption by building capacities of women to install and maintain fuel efficient stoves in union council Nara amazai and Bait galli
2. Improve livelihooods of the rural communities through designing and promoting 'Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and environment friendly and economically viable agro-forestry approaches in Nara amazai and Bait galli
3. Improve health and hygiene of the women, children through awareness sessions, child to child communication strategies in union council Nara amazai and Bait galli

Proposed Activities

Activities Against Objective 1
1.1. Training of Trainers of women Fuel Efficient Stove installation in the target area. Approximately 100 women will be trained in installation of new metal fuel efficient stoves and provide them support of the stove installation. These Master Trainers will further train around 300 women of their communities to provide technical backstopping and support to them in stove installation
1.2. Installation of approximately 400 stoves through trained women in the target villages/settlements.
1.3. Formation of the women groups and organizing social mobilization sessions to motivate and create demand for the fuel efficient stoves in the area
1.4. Launching 'Save a Tree-Grow a Tree' Campaign in the target area through organizing awarenes sessions in the schools, villages, organizing meetings and printing material to create a mass mobilization for environment conservation
1.5. Organizing Radio Talk Shows on the benefits of fuel efficient stoves and environment conservation to raise awareness of the general public on environment, fuel efficient stoves and this will also generate demand for the fuel efficiency.

2. Activities Against Objective 2:

2.1. Establishment of one small community plant nurseries in the target union councils to grow and supply locally appropriate tree saplings to the communities, particularly small farmers to grow on their farm lands. Each nursery will contain around 2000 tree saplings of various tree species and varieties including fruit trees and arnamental trees
2.2. Providing training to the communities on sustainable management of the plant nurseries
2.3. Preparing a business plan of the plant nursery to ensure that the nurseries are well maintained and sustained by the communities at its own
2.4. Supply of the trees to the farmers to promote a culture of the tree plantation on the farm lands
2.5. Promote fruit tree plantation in the houses by supplying tree saplings from the nursery to the households. The project will plant approximately 2000 fruit tree saplings in the target households
2.6. Training of communities on Non-Timber Forest Products potential and management
2.7. Design low cost, affordable and marketable NTFP from the tree leaves
2.8. Organizing a three days NTFP making training for 50 community women in the target area to make them able to design the products and sell out in the market
2.9. Providing enterprise development and management trainings to the 25 women
2.10. Establish and facilitate market linkages of the trained women with the market
2.11. Establish a Marketing Center/outlet at District Headquarter to promote local NTFP and attract the market

3. Activities Against Objective 3

3.1. Forming School Environment Clubs in the area to involve students and teachers in the environment conservation campaigns and activities.
3.2. Organizing health and Hygiene awareness sessions in the communities, particularly on Clean Kitchen, Food Hygiene, Domestic Hygiene and environmental hygiene to educate women, children and men to adopt best practices.
3.3. Organizing Hygiene and Environment Festivals at the school to generate awareness of teachers and students on hygiene and environment conservation
3.4. Developing printing material on environment conservation and hygiene and distributing to the students, teachers and other community members.
3.5. Organize exposure visits of the students and teachers to the communities who are using fuel efficient stoves to motivate them to install stoves and plant trees in their homes.

Project outputs and Progress Assessment

Following are the key indicators of the project, that will be regularly assessed through result based management approach. PHKN will design specific monitoring tools and collect data in the field to assess project indicators:
? 400 households are using fuel efficient stoves in the target communities and have reduced approximately 40% reduction in the fuel wood consumption
? 100 women have received Training of Trainers (TOT) on fuel efficient stove installation and they further trained 300 women of their communities on fuel efficient stoves
? 50 women enterpreneurs are trained on making of NTFPs and marketing
? A marketing outlet of the NTFPs is established to market locally made NTFP products
? One Plant nursery is established and well maintained by the communities
? Approximately 2000 fruit trees and other locally feasible trees are planted on the farm lands
? School children and teachers have raised their understanding on the health and hygiene
? A general awareness on environmnet conservation is raised in the target area
