Introducing and promotion of Eco-friendly and energy effiecient housing in District Badin through Compressed Earth Blocks
Introducing and promotion of Eco-friendly and energy effiecient housing in District Badin through Compressed Earth Blocks
Project Objective and Proposed Activity

Proposed project is comprised of three (3) integrated and synergistic components/specific objectives that work together to address the barriers to the widespread adoption of CEB , in general, and EEKs, in particular. Each component consists of specific activities designed to address these barriers. The three project components are as follows:

Specific Objective/Component 1: Introduction and promotion of Energy Efficient Technologies CEB - This component is comprised of activities that will address the technical barriers in the rural housing that hinders the widespread applications of CEB technologies. The main outcome is the thorough understanding and appreciation of technology options and their environmental impacts by villagers and other stakeholders. The activities include the conduct of assessments of other energy conservation & energy efficiency (EC&EE) and energy efficient houses and CEB houses comparision in performance and, the development of a local artisan (masons) and consultancy service industry.

Activities envisaged for Specific Objective # 1
1. Identification of stakeholders
2. Selection of villages
3. Assessment of other energy conservation and energy efficient houses

Specific Objective/Component 2: CEB Demonstration Plot - This component will address the need to showcase the major aspects of the application of CEB in District Badin. The main outcome is the establishment of two demo CEB plots which will provide detailed information of CEB operations, energy savings and environmental impacts to interested rural mass. The activities that will be carried out under this component include the conduct of seminar-workshops for the promotion and dissemination/presentation of the results of the CEB technology; conduct of feasibility analyses of selected demonstration sites; specific activities to ensure effective demonstration project implementations; establishment of baseline data for the demonstration projects; design, installation, operation, monitoring and evaluation of the demonstration projects.

Activities envisaged for Specific Objective # 2

1. Selection of 20 artisans
2. Training of 02 Master artisans in CEB
3. Training of 20 entrepreneurs artisans on the manufacturing of CEB promotion of Energy Efficient Technologies
4. Site selection for construction of demonstration plot
5. Construction of 1-Yard plant for CEB & 2 Demo houses for poor deserving families.
6. Exposure visit of different stakeholders to demo plot

Specific Objective/Component 3: Communications and Awareness - This component is intended for addressing the barriers related to low awareness of government, public, and housing stakeholder to energy efficient brick/CEB making methodologies and practices, as well as the lack of access to information on EEKs and EC&EE in housing. The primary outcome is the enhanced awareness of the public and other stakeholders on EEKs, EE brick making methods and energy efficient bricks production. The activities include the establishment of a CEB information center, and an integrated information exchange service..

Activities envisaged for Specific Objective # 3

1. organizing consultative meetings
2. Introduction of 20 entrepreneurs/artisans
3. Organizing workshop
4. Development of IEC CEB maual and distribution in the area
5. Establishment of CEB information centre
6. Construction of Shrine and mosque portion with CEB bloc for the promotion of technology.

Expected Results

An important assumption in achieving the desired outcomes is that the key barrier-removing activities proposed will be sufficient to enable the technology to be replicated on an industry-wide basis. Such an outcome requires that all major barriers to technology adoption will be removed so that the commercialization process can proceed on its own upon project completion. Although the framework, mechanics and specific components of the barrier removing activities are yet to be detailed in an LFA exercise, the following are expected outcomes of the project:

? Reduction in GHG emissions
? Collateral reduction in local pollution
? Wide scale availability and accessibility of financing for energy efficient CEB houses
? Improved local technical capacity in the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of energy efficient houses
? Increased awareness amongst construction industry/builders regarding improved quality and efficiency costs to foster a market for the ?new? bricks (CEB blocks).
