Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A National level workshop will be organized to present survey analysis and for sharing knowledge with both local and international biogas consultants and users. Booklets with technical data will be published and three media documentaries will be produced based on the best practices. Networks will be made among all relevant national and international organizations to create a technological knowledge sharing platform. A skilled technical pool will be created to offer future needs of technical expertise on biogas technology.

Notable Community Participation

Bio energy village concept will be carried out in two selected areas which are highly vulnerable to climate change. The selected community will be able to enhance their lives with bio gas technology as they can obtain both alternative energy and organic fertilizers.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Bio gas user committees will be initiated in the selected villages and an environment fund will be created for the environmental service with small contribution from energy savings from the biogas plant. It will be developed up to community financing system for the development of rural community.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

District level biogas user association will be established and National and international level experience sharing platform to will be developed General public will be made aware of the contribution of Methane emission from domestic organic waste to the climate change.

Project sustainability

The NGO has trained a team with technical capacity to expand the work and cater to demands of new biogas users. They were trained according to the new quality parameters while fulfilling the need of environment friendly ways to manage waste contributing to local and global requirements. The study also generated data on methane emissions in other sectors such as paddy fields for comparison in future analyses. The newly designed portable model when introduced will popularize biogas as a renewable energy source among a wider public as it has the advantages of being cost effective i.e. cheap to manufacture, easy to operate and maintain, small in size but with efficient capacity and requiring minimum space/land in urban gardens and able to manage wet waste generated by the household.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The organic fertilizer generated from the bio gas plants will be released as a marketable product parallel to the ?Mahinda Chinthana ? DiviNeguma Program?The project will commercialize the biogas industry by introducing innovative model of bio gas plant which will create new job opportunities . The production of bio gas plant related equipment and tools will be produced locally creating new job opportunities to the university students.

Policy Impact

This project will be a supportive project for carbon fund introduced by Climate Change Secretariat of Ministry of Environment. The project will link with national policies and priorities such as ?Haritha Lanka Program? and National Policy of Climate Change.

Project Results

A technical committee was appointed for a comprehensive analysis of the existing bio-gas plant network and to identify standards for bio-gas digesters.

A survey of existing bio-gas plants was undertaken through a combination of stratified and random sampling by a university team. Data was collected from 132 existing bio-gas digesters. The survey report outlines drawbacks in design, operation and maintenance and best practices.

To achieve the objective of introducing an innovative model three bio-gas digesters were constructed, the most effective one being the one at the Navy Camp Rapid Action Boat Squadron Headquarters at Kalpitiya with a capacity of 35 m3 capable of providing solutions for toilet water overflow and waste disposal. Secondly a model of a bio-gas digester which can be used especially in an urban setting with limited space, was designed. The low cost portable pre-cast PVC anaerobic bio-gas digester for domestic users with a capacity that ranges from 5 ? 6 m3, which can be operated with kitchen waste and septic tank waste of a typical family is to be introduced with expert recommendations.
