Integrated Agroforestry in Khoriya (Shifting Cultivation) Lands for Conservation and Livelihood
Slash and burn agriculture or shifting cultivation is predominantly being practiced in Raksirang and Sarikhet VDCs (two of 10 VDCs of COMDEKS site) of Makawanpur district. Due to population pressure and lack of agriculture land, the indigenous Chepangs and Tamangs practice slash and burn agriculture in the same marginal slash and burn land every year. As such, shifting from one land to another has virtually stopped. With no fallow period, the land could not regain naturally and productivity has reduced significantly.
In order to prevent land from further degradation and regain productivity, the project aimed to introduce slopping agriculture land technology (SALT), built infrastructure for micro irrigation promote renewable energy technology in the proposed VDCs.
