Radhi gewog in Trashigang Dzongkhag lies 25km east from the main Dzongkhag town. The gewog consist 749 households and covers an area of 29 square kilometers. By nature, the gewog is situated in north facing with gentle slope experiencing humid summer and a pleasant winter. The four villages namely Khudumpang, Tsamang, Ngatshang and Langteng in the gewog are visible hotspot for degradation of natural resources and agriculture land since long time back. There is constant and frequent occurrence of erosions and landslides affecting production of agriculture crops as a result affecting the livelihood of people who heavily depend on agriculture.
Thus, the project ?Agricultural landscape protection and management? under Radhi gewog was deemed necessary and was carried out in collaboration with Sazhing Yuenten Tshogpa, a community based group. The objective of the projects were:
i. Protection of paddy fields from landslides and erosion,
ii. Protection of agriculture land through Sustainable Land Management techniques and
The project protected and managed 22.6 acres of paddy fields through sustainable land management techniques; construction of causeway and check dams and protection of irrigation channel, thus minimizing the possibilities of erosion, slides and loss of agriculture products and land. The native tree saplings plantation was carried out. The 60 households in the four villages have greatly benefitted from the project; their agricultural lands are protected hence reduced land degradation and thus, ensuring improvement of their livelihood.
