The community of Chã de Feijoal is located in the municipality of Porto Novo, Santo Antão Island. It lies about 36 km from the city of Porto Novo. It has 15 households, totaling a population of 62 inhabitants. It does have a great energy potential (about 9 hours of sunshine per day).
Due to the isolation Chã de Feijoal does not yet have electricity. The population uses fossil fuels for lighting in particular butane gas, and oil. In some cases families? rely on fire wood to lighting, which contributes to desertification and many other environmental problems.
The community members are very poor, isolated and have difficulty in accessing butane gas for lighting and cooking. This problem is exacerbated by successive increases in fuel prices of recent years. In this sense, the local association, in partnership with the municipality of Porto Novo, and the Renewable Energy Systems and Equipment Maintenance - IMESER, will implement a PV integrated system for power distribution with 5KW capacity to at least 15 families.
