Enhanced communities awareness & technology transfer for sustainable land management in Laikipia West sub-county
Project aims at enhancing community capacity on improved and sustained livelihoods within Laikipia West. This will be achieved through promotion of high value and multipurpose tree species, promotion of low-carbon technologies, formation of a charcoal producers association amongst other activities.
The overall objective of the project is to enhance communities? capacities within Laikipia West sub-County for improved and sustainable land and other natural resources management.
The project also has specific objectives to obtain the main objective:
To improve local communities? livelihoods through promotion of 1,500 high value and multipurpose tree species, 10,000 units of cover crops and marketing of sunflower
To enhance community capacity to benefit from Kenya Forest (Charcoal) Rules of 2009 through formation and operationalization of 3 charcoal producing associations and airing of 1 radio program
To build capacities of 500 community members through training of trainers on conservation agriculture, establishment of 15 demonstration gardens, conducting 2 field days and production of 2000 copies of awareness pamphlet
To promote low-carbon technologies at community level through construction of 15 small (6m3) biogas units for demonstration purposes

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Production of 2000 copies of an awareness pamphlet to enhance publicity. Two field days to enhance public awareness. Airing of one radio program targeting enhanced public awareness of commuinites' contributions towards addressing environment and natural resources degradation in an FM Radio station. During field days, women will participate in both learning and exhibitions of best practices. The promotion of biogas an alternative source of renewable energy will not only be economical for the affected household but it will also allow for more time by women to engage in other productive activities.
Notable Community Participation
Specific sites where the biogas units will be installed will be established jointly with community members. There will be continuous interaction with the communities in the project target area. The project scales up some of community initiated activities thus creating a sense of ownership and responsibility on the side of the community.
