Notable Community Participation

The community is willing to work together to plant native seeds in the area to help rescue and plant them with the assistance of a local storage unit for seeds. There is a need to promote awareness on seed planting and management along with workshops and capacity building activities with a sustainable focus to promote a diverse quality and production. 16 communities in the Delmiro Gouveia county will help produce, package and sell products.

Project sustainability

The project enabled the cooperative to process all local beans production using agroecological practices and traditional seeds. It is expected to generate income for 120 families through beans processing and marketing in local market. However, the intense drought that the region is facing in the last three years, prevented the cooperative to reach the results expected so far.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project focuses on improving livelihoods through capacity building activities in order to recover the region´s degraded areas, where seed diversification and plating will be prioritized.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

These activities serve as an example for the entire local population which sees results in the production and information dissemination among the local communities.

Project Results

- 15 communities benefitted = 560 families;
- Loan of USD 100,000 for working capital obtained from state government for the next crop.
- 28 capacity building activities performed - about agrobiodiversity, seed baks management, benefitting 595 people, 318 women and 35 young people, also 124 young people learned about agroecology;
- 27 seed banks participants learned about marketing;
- 70 ha og agroecological corn crops and 90 ha of beans;
- The project contributed to the recovery and mantenance of 24 traditional varieties of beans, 9 of corn, 2 pumpkin and 2 watermelon;
-180 ha of Caatinga conserved by the families;
- Industrial bens packer bought and working;
- Cooperative's bens brand created and disseminated.
