Promote a more sustainable Community led approach towards a Zero Waste City – responsible waste management
? After the massive earthquake in January 2001, a temporary housing site was developed for the affected communities of Bhuj City and this area was later designed as a permanent relocation site for the poorest sections of the society. Around 300 houses were constructed and it has been decided to connect the site to the main sewage line of the city which became complicated and expensive.
? 2,600 households from 13 areas have been studied where Sakhis collect household waste of 340 gram per household.
? Bhuj city does not have a Sewage Waste Management system in place that addresses the need of its citizen and also the methods in the place to deal with the solid waste are severely outdated.
? Hunnarshala Foundation thus starts the project in collaboration with Sahjeevan, Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan (KMVS) and Bhuj Nagar Seva Sadan (Bhuj municipality). They have been proposed to have four, Zero Waste Centres (ZWC) (one in each zone) where recycling, disposal and management of dry waste will be divided into recyclables and non-recyclables.
? It will also be ensured that these nalas do not become garbage and sewer dumps and above all drain the city in the monsoons without causing floods.
